Hi Barry:

What great news! Okay, we need to think about the reintroduction of the mate. Here are a couple of thoughts. If the birds have to stay out of water for 3 weeks, this is okay as you can wet the birds down with a water hose (as long as the veterinarian allows you to do this) every so often. This allows the feathers to get wet and causes the swan to preen himself which he needs to do to keep his feathers healthy. So, if both swans have to remain out of the water this issue is an easy fix.

Now, the other problems. Having the mate nearby is going to change his demeanor in that he will be able to talk to her and she will know that he is okay which will be a calming affect on him. However, if he tries to get to her, he may injure himself so you need to see how he is reacting to her showing up. You probably cannot put them together as we are entering a Mute Swan's mating season. He does not need to try mating with her because he can once again hurt his leg.

If you keep taking the female swan back and forth, she may get stressed and he may get stressed by seeing her leave. So, this is going to be a catch 22 and you will need to observe how each is doing in the different enclosures. If they are happy just seeing each other, then we have done what needs to be done as far as keeping him motivated to live. However, if this causes further stress, then you may need to wait and bring her to him once he is able to have her in the same pen. We hope that we haven't confused the situation, but we have seen swans get extremely depressed and even die after being separated from their mates. Let us know how he progresses. The Regal Swan
