Our male swan, after surgery with two pins in his leg, and staying at a bird sanctuary under daily care to recuperate didn't make it. His leg lost too much blood and became infected after a couple of weeks, the vet. had to put him down. Devastating.
I introduced a new male, buying him from a reputable breeder two days ago, but the female is having no part of him. She patrols the unfrozen area of our huge pond and will not allow him in the water for very long. I had a scare today when the male walked off of our 30 acre property into a stream that leads down to the Rondout Creek and into the Hudson River. Somehow we got him out of there ( a mile away) and reintroduced him back onto the pond, but the female again is being aggressive.
Is this normal behavior for a female, although she was bonded for a couple of years with the male that died? The poor male is sitting there totally rejected and hungry. The breeder guaranteed me this wasn't normal but said to give it a week. I am sure its a female and new male.
