Hi Clara

Several weeks ago we were notified of two swans in the Intercoastal in Hallandale with one finally leaving the area. So, the swan you are seeing is probably one of the two swans.

We have been asked to intervene, however, there are several major issues:

1. The swan can fly so there is a very slim chance that we would be able to capture the bird.

2. Since it can fly, we or anyone else trying to intervene could possibly fly into the airport, into the Atlantic (which would be extremely salty and not conducive to its survival with sharks, or we could force it into a pond with other predators such as an alligator.

3. For us to intervene, we would need several boats and because we are 3-4 hours away and a non-profit organization, we would need someone to donate expenses for our team to try and capture the bird. AGAIN, the chances of capture are very bleak.

4. We have a team member that is familiar with the area and she states that there are pockets of fresh water in the area as well as restaurants and other homes and docks where there is potential of someone or several people feeding the swan. If this is the case, it has a nice suitable habitat and would not only try to return because there is a food source but might also be the reason that it has not flown from the area.

A swan or any other animal is NOT going to stay in an area with little food resources, safe from predators, free from noise and harassment and a good water supply. So, if the swan leaves, it means that it is searching for another area to take up residence. If it stays and people can entice the swan with food, eventually, you might be able to capture the bird and have it removed to a safer area such as waterfowl/wildlife rehabilitation center, or someone's private farm or pond in which there are no predators and with a more suitable habitat.
