Hi Kathie:

Waterfowl, swans, ducks and even some aquatic wildlife will chew at the foam, especially if it breaks into small pieces due to sun/water rot. Therefore, foam, plastic or other materials that can sun/water rot are not the best materials to use around water or wildlife.

If you are going to use a floatable material, it needs to be contained so that birds and wildlife cannot constantly pick at the material and especially ingest it.

The best case scenario would be to remove the foam and hand adjust the feeder according to the fluctuation of the water level. Rising the feeder another 4 inches should at least alleviate any water that is not necessarily from the wet beaks of the swans. We agree that the swan's beaks does keep the food rather moist and even wet at times, but this is to be expected. However, it should still only be a 2-3 times a week scoop to remove the moist and wet material from the feeder. We hope this helps. The Regal Swan
