Alaskan Trumpet Swans: Will they migrate without the male swan?

We have a pond close to our home where two swans have returned to for many years to nest and raise their cygnets until it's time to migrate. Last week, unfortunately the male was hit on the road and later was put down. The female and 4 cygnets will need to migrate soon. They are still in their pond, but make trips across the road to another pond and then return to the original pond. This is how the male got hit? My question is why are they going back and forth between the two ponds? And will they migrate without the male? It's sept. And time for them to be on their way, we're just worried they will stay while mom morns the missing male. Thankyou for your answer.
