Hi Caroline:

Are the cygnets from swans that were already on your pond or did you buy 6 cygnets? This is going to make a big difference regarding their acceptance of you. Three month old cygnets left on a pond without parents are probably not going to survive due to predation, possible illness, etc. If there are no parents, the cygnets should be placed in a safe, sheltered pen and slowly acclimated to your pond and you.

We would suggest that you construct a pen (lined on the bottom with poultry fencing so turtles and other peredators cannot dig under the fencing to get to the cygnets. You will also need to place a fenced top on the pen so that predators cannot climb over the pen or fly in (such as hawks, eagles, etc.). Part of the pen should be in the water and part of the pen on land.

A Blitz feeder using cracked corn and poultry layer pellets should be placed in the water in the pen and the cygnets shown how to use the feeder. Until the cygnets learn how to use the Blitz feeder it is important that you contact the previous owner (if the swans were purchased) to ascertain the type of feeding program they were using. If a different feeding system was used, you will need to continue using this system as well as introduce them to the Blitz Feeder so that the cygnets do not starve because they are not used to a Blitz feeder. The cygnets should not be placed on the pond until the cygnets are at least 6 months of age as the cygnets will be large enough to protect themselves. We hope that this information is of benefit to you. The Regal Swan
