How to befriend our new swans

I think we solved the problem. The previous owner (we purchased the swans)fed them from a pan, so we put out two pans of feed at one end of the lake, where they seem to like to hang out. Then my husband and I got into a canoe and did a "swan roundup". Actually, this was a v-e-r-y slow motion endeavor in which we guided them into the correct area. We never got within 100 feet of them, so they wouldn't get upset.

And then we waited. And waited. Eventually, they became curious about the two pans of feed right at the waterline, and investigated. And started to eat. Once all of them were enjoying the feed, Alan and I quietly slipped away to the opposite shore.

My plan is to keep the pans of feed replinished. I think that eventually the swans and I will become friends, and I can be near them when they eat. I am patient. :)

Our lake is very secure from most predators (like dogs, etc.) as we have a fence + a Newfoundland that keeps other animals out. And these 3 month old birds are HUGE - almost as big as adults, so there is no way that a hawk could lift one.

We will look into Blitz feeders, as I presume that they protect the feed from rain.

Thanks for the info,
Caroline
