Hi Dan:
Without seeing the swan habitat surrounding your beach, it is going to be somewhat difficult to offer any suggestions. So, here are a few questions that you need to ask yourself:
1. What makes your lawn different from other lawns or areas in the swan habitat (i.e., nice grass, petunias, what we call grazing foods)?
2. Safe from predators (i.e., are children, domestic dogs, wild animals). Does your area provide protection and a safe observation point for the birds?
3. Is your lawn/beach area the only clearing in the area so that the swans have a nice place to rest and sun themselves without getting tangled in dense undergrowth?
4. Are the swans wild or were they brought to your lake as a captive species? Do you or your neighbors feed the swans, especially near your lawn area?
If you answer yes to any of the above questions, then you may have the answer as to why your area has been chosen by the swans. You might try a small poultry/vinyl fence (about 4 feet high) to temporarily cause the swans to go elsewhere especially if there is another cleared area away from your lawn for the swans to go. Take some cracked corn/poultry layer pellets, bread, lettuce, etc. and place the food away from your beach area and see if the swans hang around the food. Good luck. Let us know your solution.
