Hi Aelise:
At the 2014 Swan Symposium held in Maryland, in 2014, Her Majesty's Swan Warden, Dr. Christopher Perrins (Oxford University) presented a paper that specifically addressed this issue. After 200 years of record keeping, the Mute Swan population has actually stabilized along the Thames River (with no human intervention or management plans) and has not exponentially exploded like the NY DEC proposes in their speculative (non-scientific) based plan regarding a population of 2200 Mute swans.
Nilsson (Sweden) 2014, states that a flock of 10,000 Mute Swans reside in an area less than what the NY DEC references and there is NO NEGATIVE ECOLOGICAL IMPACT.
Yet, based upon potential, speculation, possibilities and anecdotal data (No Scientific research), the NY DEC proposes to kill these swans. We are extremely opposed to this plan or any other management program that would eradicate or reduce their population. There is no scientific basis for any management control. The Regal Swan
