Lonely swan appeared on our pond: Temperament, gender, will it stay, will another join?

Over the weekend a swan just appeared on our small pond alone.
I thought they mated for life.
Is there any way to determine the gender of it?
What temperment can we expect from it, as our son has a small jon boat he fishes from in the area the swan has been lingering?
Since the bird is alone, can we expect a prospective mate to appear?
Is it likely that it will disappear as quickly as it appeared?
I am sorry for all the questions, but I am curious about our new guest
