community mute swans

Our community had two mating pair of mute swans. The female of one pair died on the east side of the lake. The mating pair on the west side of the lake had a cygnet last spring. The mating pair has chased that cygnet up the river toward a road on the back side of the west side. Can we assume that the cygnet is a male & that is why it did not gravitate toward the single male on the east side? Should we capture the young cygnet and bring it to the east side of the lake to see if it takes with the single male or is that too dangerous for the cygnet?
