Hi Steve

Either bird was not feeling well and took some time to recoup before traveling on, eggs hatched and family left the nest or eggs were not viable and swan left the nest.

If the swan does not return to the area in the next few days or weeks, highly unlikely it will return. There is also a possibility that the swan is still in the area, just not on the nest or in the immediate area which you can observe. The Regal Swan
