Wandering Male Swan

We have a mated pair of white mute swans. We have had them 1 year on our farm with a large pond. They have always wandered around, coming up to our house or the barn especially when hungry but they never wandered toward the road - until recently. The male especially has been seen along the road & across the road - the pond is quite a distance back off the road. Nothing that we know of has changed within the environment or feeding. The only thing I have noticed is that is hasn't rain much recently & the grass is getting dryer. Could he be in search of better vegetation? There is a small stream on the way towards the road & I've seen him eating there, but he continues. Any suggestions? I don't want to see them get hit but I don't know what to do to keep them from getting out there. Thanks so much!
