Swan Behavior after Mate Passes

My 18 yr old female mute swan passed a few weeks ago. We purchased a new female for her husband, we were told she is 4 1/2. They kept their distance for a few hours then started swimming together. Next morning a baby from last year shows up again angers the male we remove the juvinile but the male starts chasing the new female. A few hours later everything is ok. Next am the new female swallows fishing line we have to net her to remove it, she is ok no hook thank god.She really doesn't like us too much would you.
Today when I feed them she eats he eats and then he starts biting her. This morning he was chasing her again when geese showed up. I know he is older than she by 6-9 years, but is this behavior common? Will this match work eventually if he is showing agressive behavior intermitently. He is in molt also that has to anger him along with the excessive temps. I though he was depressed that is why I purchased him a new girlfriend. Did I do the wrong thing or will this be a match made in heaven?
