Hi:

This question has to be determined by the acreage of your pond and habitat. If you have less than 8 acres (and this is stretching it), your swans are going to become a nightmare. During nesting season, the parents are going to chase the cygnets from the area and you will have wandering swans if your pond and habitat is not large enough and enclosed. Wandering swans can be killed by predators, cars, etc. Non-wandering swans can be beaten by the parents so severely that they may need veterinary medical care or they will not be allowed to enter the pond and feed, thus resulting in starvation and dehydration.

We do not know the gender of your cygnets, but for the sake of argument, let's say you have 3 new breeding pairs. This means that there will be an odd man/woman left out. The lone swan will definitely be on its own and will be chased and beaten by the other pairs during nesting season. So, you will need to get rid of the extra swan or add a mate, now you have 5 pairs of breeding swans on your lake, each producing 1-10 cygnets a year. What will you do with the extra cygnets.

This question is one that we receive many times a year. If you have a breeding pair of swans, plans must be made prior to their nesting season regarding how the cygnets are going to be placed. It is not an easy situation and if you do not have a good home to place them, ultimately, they may be killed or die from lack of care. Good luck. The Regal Swan
