We are very sorry for your loss. We know how hard it is to work so hard to try and protect the swans from predators only to lose the battle. Be careful with the male as the mink will most likely return. Even if you remove the mink, it probably has a family in the area or there are other minks. So you will need to be constantly vigilant.

As far as a mate, depending on the species and individual swan, most male swans will not re-pair. Since your bird is fairly young, he may re-pair but you will need to keep the new bird in a pen ( totally enclosed top to bottom to keep predators from digging under or climbing over and into the pen. A feeder should be placed inside the pen and the pen should be 1/2 in water and 1/2 on land. The female should be kept in the pen for approximately 2 weeks to allow her to assimilate to her new habit, you and the male to see if there are any signs of aggresion on the part of the male. If so, then he will probably not accept her.

If you cannot protect the male from predators, you may find it extremely difficult to protect a new swan especially in a pen

Can the male fly? If so he may try to leave the area and find another habitat or mate. The Regal Swan
