Hi Robyn:

Great news that Lady Conrad is now doing well and has a new mate. The freezing pond has several major concerns:

1. Predators can easily access the swans even in the middle of the pond if the ice is solid enough to hold their weight.

2. The swans will not be able to have any aquatic vegetation as the material may not be available during the winter months.

3. If the swans cannot fly, they will be subjected to very cold temperatures, little food sources and may not have the ability to seek shelter in areas that will minimize the cold and wind.

If you can get a blower, that is great, otherwise, try to break the ice around the banks closest to your home so that you can watch for predators. Place the food in the water close to the bank so that the swans can enter and exit the water without getting caught in the ice and possibly drowning. The best solution is to bring the swans indoor into a barn, garage or other area that you can protect them from predators, still feed them and give them access to a small kiddie pool or shower of water on a daily basis. If you look in the archives of this website, we showed an indoor pen that we have produced which can easily fit in a garage. The garage needs to be free from gas and other chemicals. If the indoor pen is used in a barn, the barn must not be able to penetrated by any predators otherwise, you will need to have an enclosure like a large dog run that can be used to protect the swans in an open barn setting.
