Hi:

It is possible that the swan could mate with both females, but highly unusual. The most probable scenario will be that he will pick one as his mate and the other female will be the odd bird out. This will mean that the lone female may be chased by the pair and not allowed to eat, bathe, enter or exit the water.

If and when the pair do eventually mate, they will probably need to be placed in a secure pen (1/2 in water and 1/2 on land with feeder inside). The pen will need to be enclosed so that no predators can dig under the pen or climb into the pen. The pen will allow the young parents to concentrate on taking care of the family instead of working on chasing the lone female from the area.

Depending upon your pond, you might wish to get a mate for the female, but this would depend on the age of the female and if you want to have to deal with a lot of cygnets. At 8-10 months of age, the cygnets will then be chased from the area and you will start all over again with having to find the young birds a new home. Conversely, if you get her a mate (unless it is a female) you will have two fighting pairs instead of one. Mates of the same gender may or may not work depending on the age of the swans and the individual swan. The Regal Swan
