Hi Barry:

The pen needs to be 1/2 in water and 1/2 on land so that the birds can bathe and preen. There should be a feeder or feeder system inside the pen so that they know how you are going to feed them and that you are their caretaker. The pen needs to be enclosed top and bottom so that no predator can dig under the pen or climb over to access the birds.

The swans need to stay in the pen for approximately 2 weeks to acclimate themselves to you and their new habitat. For the winter, they will need shelter such as bushes, an island or other wind/cold barrier.

If you scroll down this website, you will see an in-depth answer regarding the needs for your pond and the habitat which was posted by Bob Knox from Knox Swans and Sue Cruz from Vertex Water Features. You will definitely need an aerator to keep the swans and the water healthy as well as a means to keep the pond from freezing in the event that the pond can freeze. Sue can be contacted at (800) 432-4302 in the event that you need an aerator. She can provide you with much more detailed information.

It is very important that barriers also be placed throughout the habit to block the wind and provide some shelter. However, if this is not a possibility or the habitat is located in a very severe winter type setting, then, the swans may need an indoor shelter during severe weather or at least at night. Again, this shelter must be protected from predators and if you do not have a barn or other such building, a garage can also be used. If you need further information after seeing the previous post, please do not hesitate to contact us again. The Regal Swan
