Hi Barbara:
If you or someone has a boat and can safely access the lake, we would suggest going out to see if you can affect a rescue.
If you can capture him, then you would need to keep him in a secure shelter such as a barn or garage, safe from predators. The shelter would need to have straw or hay (if inside a barn) free from pests such as rats and ants and place cracked corn and layer pellets in a bowl with a nearby water bowl.
If you keep him in a garage, you can use sheets on the floor (do not use anything slippery like plastic or newspapers). Place the food bowl and water bowl nearby. You must also insure that there is no chemicals or gas in the area.
If you can't keep him, then you need to find a waterfowl rescue facility that can house him for the winter. He may be a young male that did not get out of the area in time for winter. If someone can hold him until after winter and then return him to the lake, the will be able to find other swans in the spring and continue a normal life. We hope this helps. The Regal Swan
