Black Swans: Mother ill, father ushers her away and keeps the cygnet

We have had a pair of black swans for about 10 years, they have had numerous cygnets, this time only one survived and it is about 2 months old. The mother seems to have an illness, her face looks a little strange and will not eat.The male does not want to know her and ushers her away, he keeps the cygnet with him. I am so distressed, please can you help.
