Hi Rebecca:

You are welcome. The time out is only going to work if the time out is done immediately and quickly once any attacking behavior is demonstrated by the swan. You will also need to do this every time that the swan begins to attack.

It will only take a couple of times for him to realize that if he shows any type of aggressive behavior towards you, that it will not be tolerated. Again, the object is not to keep him from protecting himself if there is a real threat and hormones must also be taken into account at mating season, but any other aggressive behavior needs to be curbed.
