Hi Renee:

It is very important to find out what killed the female. Placing another swan in this environment could just place another victim on the pond. There is no guarantee that whatever killed the female will not return to kill the male.

Males may or may not re-pair. In order to add another female, you would need to construct a veterinary pen enclosed top and bottom so that no predators can climb in or dig under the pen. The pen must be 1/2 in the water and 1/2 on land with a feeder inside. Cracked corn and poultry layer pellet in a 50% ratio should be placed in the feeder.

The female will need to be kept in the pen for approximately 2 weeks to ensure that there is no aggressiveness shown from the male. Once the female is released from the pen, then a boat needs to be on standby so that if there is any signs of aggressiveness, a rescue can be effected immediately. Signs of aggressiveness means that the male is not accepting a new swan on the pond, much less a new mate.

If you want another pair, and if you are completely sure that you know what caused the death of the first swan (and there is no chance that the predator or cause will repeat itself), then you might consider contacting Bob Knox at Knox Swans in Chicago. Bob might be able to pick up the male and reintroduce a new pair to your pond. The male will be found another home where he might try to re-pair with another swan or at least be paced into a flock where he can reside with other swans. We hope this information is of benefit.
