Hi Ann:

Black swans are southern hemisphere swans as they originate from Australia. If your pond is going to freeze, the temperatures get below 45 degrees F, we would suggest that you bring the swan indoors. You can use a shed, barn, garage or other indoor shelter as long as it is protected from predators getting inside. The swan should be provided a bowl of food and a bowl of fresh water side by side while placed indoors. Straw, hay or other non-slip surface should be used indoors and can provide another source of warmth for the swan. If the swan is going to be kept in a garage, you can use sheets, but you must ensure that the swan cannot get into an area with objects which can injure the swan. Gasoline and other chemicals should also be removed from the swan's area. As far a de-worming, we would suggest that you consult a veterinarian with the proper dosage and medication for parasites. If you do not have an avian veterinarian in your area, you can contact Bob Knox at Knox Swans or Sylvan Heights waterfowl in North Carolina to see what might be conducive to your area.
