Hi Nic:
Bread is not the greatest food source, but one that most people feed the swans and now they have been accustomed to this treat. Grained breads are better. Moldy bread should never be given to the swans as it can make them sick.
Too much bread can change the blood chemistry of the swans and therefore, lettuce, cracked corn and poultry layer pellets dropped in the water are actually better supplemental foods. But, trying to get the swans to eat these foods is akin to having a child eat vegetables once he has the taste for ice cream. Enjoy these beautiful birds and their co-habitants. The Regal Swan
