Hi Kelly:
We're sorry to hear about the male swan. Do you have any predators, i.e., coyotes, raccoons, etc.? If so, the fencing may not be able to help her if the predator can dig under or climb over the fencing. The male usually is the protector of the nest and the female swan. Did you have a necropsy conducted on the dead swan to see exactly what might have killed him? If not a predator, could he have been poisoned or had an underlying injury or illness?
With concrete evidence of what caused the swan's death, you will be able to better determine what measures may be needed to help protect the female and any cygnets that she may have. The Regal Swan
