The swans do need some light to see. Even under the darkest conditions in their native habitat, they will rely on at least some light from the stars or moon. The dim light is good, but lighting may not be the only reason that the parents are stepping on the cygnets. If the swans are young parents, they have no idea what it is crawling beneath them, nor do they care. Once they become experienced parents, they will learn how to take care of the cygnets much better. They also may not be able to see the young birds under their large feet or bulging bodies.

Removing the male may help with his big feet, but will do nothing if the female also has the propensity to step on her young. By separating the family, more harm may be done because both parents need to bond with their young in order to facilitate daily care. The Regal Swan
