Re: Double Clutch: Will the parents drive the 7-week-old cygnet away when new eggs hatch?

The swans that have laid another clutch of eggs are Mute Swans. They had three cygnets hatch in April, two of the cygnets were removed five days later. We kept one cygnet so that the parents would not continue to lay eggs and so they would have a cygnet to raise. We do not plan to remove the cygnet until fall when the parents would normally chase him off, however, this could change if the parents start chasing him away. I have been hand feeding him in shallow water so that he will learn to bottom feed and the parents allow him to eat by their side. I have seen the cygnet alone in the middle of the lake on a few occasions and with the male swan on other occasions.

Our plan is to carefully watch for aggressive behavior by the parents and if necessary remove him to a safer location, and we will continue hand feeding until he is able to eat from a bucket or bottom feed.

As we are in Sun City West, Arizona the daytime temperatures for this time of year are between 95 to 105 degrees and the female is sitting on a nest in a enclosure with shading. What are the chances of these eggs hatching?
