Hi Janice:

There are a couple of reasons the swan may be sitting in the middle of the road. The first, would be an injury as the bird may have mistaken the slick ice for a pond and crash landed on the road. It may be hurt and sitting in the middle of the road will get it killed, so it needs to be captured. Is there a rescue group in your area that will not kill the swan? Many states will authorize veterinarians, wildlife facilities and others who rescue the Mute Swans to kill them and not try to help. So, you may need to be careful as to who you call for assistance.

The second reason could be that the bird is frozen on the road. Again, not a good scenario.

The third reason would be that the bird is sitting on the asphalt, similar to snakes at night because of the warmth provided by the surface. Even then, this is not a good site for the bird as it will get hit by a car. Hopefully, the swan will have left the area and will not return before something happens to it via predator or vehicle. If it is cannot move, it will be killed by a car unless someone rescues it. The Regal Swan
