Hi Joan:

Since the swan was previously injured and we presume that he/she has recovered, we would still be concerned about the oncoming winter months and the swan's inability to migrate.

Too large a pond will put the swan in danger of being stranded on a ice/frozen area with the inability to remove himself from the pond. Too small a pond will place the swan in danger of predators taking him for a food source during the scarce winter. If possible, we would suggest that you take him to a wildlife rehabilitation center which will have waterfowl shelters and keep him there until the winter is over. If this is not possible, we would suggest some windbreaks (bushes/trees) that can block some of the direct winds. There is not a whole lot that you can do with an existing pond in the middle of winter, so you might even try to see if one of the locals would put him in a garage (no gas, chemicals, etc. and an area that can be washed daily) or other such shelter where he can be fed and kept warm and dry.

Food is important for the winter. Provide him with lettuce, cracked corn and poultry layer pellets as well a some bread. You want to provide him with plenty of clean water and water him down a couple of times a day or provide him with a kiddie pool in the event that he is taken inside. We hope that this information is of benefit. The Regal Swan
