You have been given somewhat inaccurate information, so we will try to provide you with some options. First, having one swan is not cruel or abusive. Swans can and will survive on their own without a mate. This occurs in the wild when mates are killed, etc.

If you get a male swan, you obviously are going to have to deal with cygnets (baby swans) and you will eventually have to decide what to do with the cygnets once they are removed from the pond by their parents because of the new mating season.

Two males may be able to protect themselves, but if there are predators in the area, it doesn't matter if they are male or female, the swans may still not have a chance.

The female you have now, may not agree to any new swan as well as the new swan may not want anything to do with your swan. So, it is a 50-50 chance of success. Female swans can and will mate, produce a nest and eggs except they will not be fertile. Even if you had two males, they will mate and nest, no eggs produced, but they will go through the mating season.

In order to introduce a new swan, you will need to build a pen (covered on top and bottom- so predators cannot dig under or climb over the pen). The pen will have to be 1/2 in water and 1/2 on land with a feeder inside. The new swan will need to stay in the pen for at least 2 weeks until the swans can safely introduce themselves. Once the new swan is placed onto the pond, you will need to have a boat standing by to ensure you can capture the new swan should any aggressive behavior be present. If aggressive behavior is seen, you will need to return the new swan and get him or her off of the pond so that the swans do not injure or kill each other. We hope that this information is of benefit. The Regal Swan
