Hi Jacqueline:

There are no guarantees that the female will take on another mate. She can survive without a mate, the problem is if she can survive another coyote attack. It would be better to bring her indoors for a couple of days so that if the coyote revisits, it does not find her or any other swan on the pond. This may curb the chances of its return, however, this is also not a guarantee.

The safest plan would be to fence in the pond, or train the swan to go out onto the pond during the daytime (at least one hour after daylight and at least 1 hour before dusk). You need to rotate the timing somewhat so that no predators see you marching the swan in or out to the pond and they start to appear at the time of the release or march back inside.

Additionally, should you get another male, you will need to build a pen (1/2 on the bank, 1/2 in water with feeder inside) enclosed top to bottom, so that no predator can dig under the pen or climb into the pen to access the swan. The swan will need to stay in this pen for approximately 2 weeks to allow it to acclimate itself to you, its new habitat, the female swan and your feeding protocols. This acclimation period will also allow the female swan to be properly introduced to the new swan. If there is any sign of aggression during the swan being penned or immediately after its release, then you will need to find the male a new home. Also, by having a male, you may need to possess a breeder's license should your swans have cygnets (young). You will also be required to have the cygnets pinioned (rendered unable to fly) at 1-3 weeks of age and find a good home for them once they reach 8-11 months of age as the parents will begin to chase them from the pond once the breeding season begins. This chasing can open the cygnets and the parents to predation as they will be leaving the pond and leaving themselves open to attack on land.

It is for these reasons, we would suggest getting another female if you want a companion swan for your present swan. This way no cygnets can be produced. You will still need to pen the new female and watch for aggression. We would also strongly suggest fencing the pond and bringing the birds indoors at night. Predators feed beginning at dusk and an hour-two hours after daylight. In any case, an unfenced unprotected swan is not a good situation if coyotes are in the area. The Regal Swan
