Hi Lori

What are the swan genders? If they are all female, they will nest and obviously produce infertile eggs. Incubating swan eggs is rather difficult and unless you have a lot of experience with swan eggs, more than likely they will not hatch.

Having said this, there are a couple of issues if they do hatch. You CANNOT place the cygnets back into the pond because the parents will not recognize them and will kill them. This brings up another issue. Many states have new laws regarding Mute Swans. Thse state wildlife officials want them dead and will actively kill them. You may need a breeders license to produce new swans and this means that you are responsible for any new swans, they must be pinioned (portion of wing amputated to prevent flying---veterinarian must perform at 1-3 weeks of age) and you are also responsible for finding them a good home and providing all legal documents. So, as you can see, trying to produce cygnets may not be a good choice in this instance.

As far as the shelter and other habitat requirements, we have a book Swans of the World Habitats: Setting the Standard for Swan Conservation that can be ordered from this site or www.theregalswan.com which provides information for all of your swan needs. The description for the shelter is too long for this forum. We hope this information is of benefit to you. The Regal Swan
