Hi Lyn:

If the cygnet is only 8 weeks of age, it probably will die from predation and/or illness if it cannot remain dry (for instance under its mother's wings). A soaking wet cygnet can drown or become ill from the cold. We would suggest that if the cygnet is staying by itself, that a swan or wildlife rescue facility be contacted to effect a rescue. Or, if you can capture it and then call the rescue facility. We're not sure where you are located, so we cannot offer any suggestions as to who might be contacted to help you at this time.
