Can a few weeks old cygnet survive without its mother?

Hi,
We live on the water and have been watching 2 swans for over a year now. This summer they had one little baby. They brought us so much joy. Sadly, the mother was just found dead. The father is still around, but what are the chances of the baby surviving? The first time we saw the baby was July 20th. I would say it is the size of a male duck now. And is it true it will go to be on its own at 6 months old??
I look so forward to hearing your answer as we are very upset about the swan family.
