Hi Kim:

Depending on the species and the individual swans, most male swans will not remate after losing their mate. Female swans, on the other hand will usually remate.

He may look lost for a day or two, but things will calm down and he will go about his business and not give it another thought. Nature does not allow wildlife to grieve like humans. If wildlife went through a long period of mourning, they would fail to tend to their mates, offspring, etc. This would caused a bigger decline in family members because grief would override the need to forage for food, protect against predators, etc.

The primary concern would be his safety. If the coyotes know they had an easy prey, they will return for him. This is not the ideal habitat to bring in another swan, especially one that does not know the area and may go on land and also get killed.

Even if she did survive, there are no guarantees that the male will accept her so you may have two fighting swans on the pond. Fighting and territorialism will usually cause one of the swans to be chased from the water which means another possibility of predator death. You would need to build a protective pen to keep her for approximately 2 weeks so they could acclimate to each other and she to the habitat.

We would strongly recommend that you capture the male, and bring him indoors two hours before dark and release him back onto the pond an hour after sunrise. Predators, especially coyotes hunt at night and if they return to the pond and do not find him, they may go elsewhere to look for an easy meal. If you keep him on the pond at night and he comes out of the water, he is probably going to be killed. Our suggestion would be to house him in a chain linked pen (covered top and bottom) so that no predator can get to him. The pen can be half in water and half on land with a feeder inside so the swan can preed on land and swim and bathe while in the pen at night. If you place fence slats in the fence, you will also protect him from seeing the predators and they from seeing him which will help calm him. Another idea would be to build a small shed which is entirely enclosed so that the swan can be kept indoors at night. Even a garage could be used as long as no chemicals, gasoline, etc., is in the immediate area. We hope that this information is of benefit. The Regal Swan
