There is no way to determine the gender of a swan without probing or conducting DNA Sequencing. A licensed veterinarian will be able to help you with this. It is important that you make sure of the gender before placing with a mate as two males may fight. Even with a mixed pair, there is no guarantee that the swan will pair with the new swan.

The chances of two sets of swans living on an acre of water if there is already a chase are not good. One pair is going to be run off or prevented from eating, bathing and nesting which can lead to some nasty fights, even death. If you would rather have two swans that like you, you might want to think about finding the aggressive swan a new home.

If it is a male swan, which it probably is, you might check with Bob Knox in Illinois at Knox Swans to see if he wants a male swan. Otherwise, you may have to live with a pair on each lake and hope that you can watch both pairs and keep them safe from predators. You will also need to insure that both pair are supplementally fed and that the ponds do not freeze during the winter.

If you choose to introduce the new swan with the aggressive swan, you will need to place the new swan in a pen (1/2 on water and 1/2 on land) with a feeder inside. The pen should be enclosed from top to bottom to keep predators from accessing the swan. The new swan should stay in the pen for 2 weeks to ensure that there is no aggression. If there is any sign of aggression, then this pairing will probably not work. Additionally, you may need to place another pen next to the new swan to allow the aggressive swan to get used to the new pond, otherwise, it may try to go back to the original pond and now you have a new swan on the new lake with the same problem on the original pond.
