Ask the Swan Specialist
Date: 10 December 2013
Hi there,
I have a mute swan on the pond just outside my door - it is penned in in the wintertime in a 4 x 4 meter area with some bubbled water (to keep it from freezing) and a small patch of dry land above the water level.
My question is: how much should 'our' swan be fed in the winter? Should the swan be fed daily? (for 3 days now, there has been no food there for him)....
I have spoken to our municipality a few times, for a few years, but if I want to offer my help, since I live near the trail and the enclosure, I would like to know the feeding protocol?
Currently, they say they feed him 3 times per week (but there are many ducks who eat his food).
I hope you are able to get back to me quickly as I am very concerned.
with thanks,
Jana
