Hi Ginger:

If the swan has white feathers, then yes, the swans only mate/nest once a year and this is the time throughout North America. So, your Texas swan is feeling the increase in hormones due to the mating season and is trying to find a mate. If you have reflective glass, this is promoting his behavior and you need to block the reflection to keep him in the pond. If this swan has been fed by people, he may be looking for a food source and is confused as to which porch the food is originating.

Your porch may also offer a safe area away from the pond and he is enjoying the area to sun and rest. Again, more than likely, it is because he is seeing another swan in the reflection of your door. If you can also block his entrance (without doing something that might injure him), this will also dissuade him from staying on the porch. Using planters, or such other objects to block his sitting on the porch will eventually make him go elsewhere. You are his safety zone right now and he may be running from domestic predators such as dogs, cats or even people. Your porch is comfortable and you need to make it uncomfortable for him to stay without forcing him into an area that may not be safe. The Regal Swan
