Hi Joy:

If you can get a couple of kayakers or a couple of boats, low motor and do not get close to the swans (otherwise the cygnets can dive under the boat and get hit by the motor). This is why kayaks are your better bet. You can run the swans onto the bank toward a building or pen area. Once they are cornered, you will be able to capture the cygnets. Use a large salmon net and capture the parents (Sam ) first. Once the cygnets are captured, get them to a qualified avian veterinarian that is experienced in pinioning (have the appointment made prior to capture so that you can expedite matters). Cygnets should not be kept from their parents more than 3 hours or you risk the parents not accepting them.

The major concern is the safety for all of the swans and more importantly humans. The cygnets can get stepped on during the capture so you must ensure that the parents are separated so this does not occur. Swans can break your legs, arms and ribs with their strong wings which is why a large net placed over the their heads and onto their bodies will keep you safe. We hope this helps. Let us know how things work out. The Regal Swan
