Hi Beth:

You might want to check your laws regarding the possession of a swan since we are not sure what species you have. In any case, you are doing the right thing by giving it warmth and food. However, you will need to be careful with the blanket as it can suffocate. It also needs a solid flooring so that it does not sprain or strain its legs. Place towels in a rubber maid tub. This will keep the food and poop self-contained and will allow him to have his own place. On top of the towels, place sheets or sheet material such as a pillow case (unbunched). This will provide his little legs with good support. Add a flat plate such as an aluminum pie pan, something with a low side so that he can access his food. Feed him cracked corn and poultry layer pellet submerged in water Make sure that the water level stays above the food and the food does not become dry as swans need plenty of water for digestion.

DO NOT place him back in the pond until he is at least 6 months of age and able to fend for himself sizewise. Otherwise, the other swans will kill him. It is going to be extremely hard to teach him swan smarts and would be better to raise him with other swans. If you have baby geese or ducks (without parents!!! very important as parents will try to kill the young swan), raise the orphaned birds together and there will be less imprinting.

YOU DO NOT want to cuddle with him. If he begins to imprint on you, i.e., thinks he is human, you will never be able to send him back to a pond or in the wild because he will be too trusting of people. If you are planning on keeping him for a pet, you must know that swans cannot be domesticated like geese or ducks, so he will still be somewhat wild in nature. Be prepared to bring him in at night or the predators will kill him. Good luck. The Regal Swan
