How long will female sit on infertile eggs (concerns for her health). How to protect cygnets from snapping turtles

Hello, can you please let me know about snapping turtles we have pet swans we live in Ontario on a large pond , the male swan is about 24 years old the female is alot younger 12 or so they have built a nest however we cannot see if she has eggs or not she has not left the nest and my concern is her health if the eggs are not fertile, if the male is too old to provide effective fertility of the eggs, how long will the female swan SIT ON POSSIBLE INFERTILE EGGS? WE ARE CONCERNED FOR HER HEALTH AS SHE HAS NOT LEFT THE NEST, SINCE EARLY April, I understand they build the nest before the eggs are laid, however we cannot get near the pond as the male is quite aggressive and she sits on a small island patch in the middle.

We were told from the last owners that the swans had previous babies but the snaping turtles unfortunately got them is there anyway to protect this from happening again? can we remove the family, and will a baby pool help on the island to keep the turtles away? any help , suggestions and information would be greatly appreciated! How long do we wait for the eggs to hatch if there is any it's been a month now , I beleive..... I am worried for the female swan.

Thank -you!
Sandra
