My wife and I are currently shopping for a new home in rural NY. We commonly see properties that have small ponds (say 1/4 to 1/2 acre) on them, sometimes just fluctuating-level catch basins for ground water but often marsh- or stream-fed ponds that are purportedly full year-round, and they've got me thinking about keeping swans. What are things we should ask about and look out for that would tip us off that a given pond is a particularly good or bad candidate for swans? Not (yet) being the property owners we can't do a bunch of water quality testing or anything like that, unfortunately, so I'm hoping you can offer some practical advice we can follow short of that. Thanks!
