Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Two swans been curled up on my frozen river for more then 5 hours?? (Loretta)

Hi, just hoping you can tell me if the two swans are stuck on the ice or just resting? They been in the same spot all day about 100 yards off shore. I love these swans I watch the mom and dad and their now almost full grown family of 7 float past my house daily. But there's only two there all day. I did noticed one stood up and sorta moved in like a sliding way about a foot or two.

But the other one I have not noticed it uncurl itself. I'm just worried there in trouble and we don't know it, how would we know or is this normal?

A few weeks ago a seagull got stuck on my deck behind a full glass railing it paced for 9 hours till my husband got home from work and scooped it up in a net and lifted it over the glass, it would not fly over it very weird my deck is about 20 x 15 and it would not fly off from the large area after it landed there, it just paced for hours looking through the glass but not walking back feet to fly off.

So after that it makes me wonder if the swarms are ok just hanging out in the 10 degree air or stuck? I called animal control but they say they don't do water rescue and fish and game is closed till Monday. Am I worried for nothing or do I need to be more pro active? And if yes who can I contact? I'm in central nj shore. And they're on the Metedaconk River just north of Cedarcroft Beach.

Thank you, Loretta
