In Response To: Nesting Female Swan's Behavior (Chasity)

We have a couple of Mute Swans and are expecting this could be their first mating year. My concern is, the past seven days or so, the female swan is maintaining her distance (which is increasing) from the male swan. Is this common during mating season? She has gained weight, is having trouble getting around, and is spending her days in the gravel next to a fence. He stays close to the pond most of the time.

I have researched nesting tendencies and haven’t come across this type of behavior. The swans were purchased to rid the business of geese. They have a pond; but I have noticed there isn’t much nesting material available to them. We have purchased straw to put out; but, the guys and I are having a difference of opinion on where the straw should be placed.

If pictures would help, just let me know what you need. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
