In Response To: Re: Male mute swan missing (The Regal Swan)

Hi Tracey: If the mother and cygnets are now flying away from your pond, they may be visiting their old pond or trying to find a more suitable habitat for the winter. If this is the case, the male may be now joining the family and staying at the new pond.

If there is a pond or several ponds in the immediate area, you might try looking to see if he has taken up at the new site and the mother and cygnets are joining him after feeding from your pond. This is the time for migration. The swans may all be looking to leave for the winter or find a better habitat sheltered from the cold. Frozen ponds reduce aquatic vegetation, promote the possibility of predation by predators which can get onto the ice and attack the swans and are conducive to swans drowning because they become trapped in between or under the ice and cannot get out of the frigid water.
