Hi Amy:

Great photo. How old is Buck & Mimi? How long have they been on your pond? Breeding season (twice a year for Black Swans) will increase the amount of territorialism. Just because they are not chasing the geese at this time, means nothing. Once breeding season begins, again territorialism will rear its ugly head.

We have several sites with Black Swans and Mute Swans as well as various other swan species. So, it is not necessarily true that other swans will not get along with them. This is totally based upon the individual swans.

If there was a problem at the other pond, it may just mean that it was mating season. We can't say for sure if this behavior will take place at your pond. Again, this depends on the individual bird, how long it has been on your pond to really acclimate itself so that it thinks this is home and the age of the birds.

One note: Black Swans may take over prime nesting areas and will not allow other swans in these areas. If you decide to breed the Mute pair, you need to ensure that there are several "prime" nesting sites. Hope this helps. The Regal Swan
