Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: Can a baby swan with one leg live? (George)

I have a summer home in NE Indiana, have been watching a pair of mute swans raise their young for the last 6 yrs. three years ago one of the cygnets had a mangled foot. the poor thing was able to keep up with the family all summer, its leg was OK but it had no foot. I was sure that when it came time for flight training it would not be able to lift off as they need to run atop the water to fly. I was glad to see that it was able to some how attain flight status, although its landings were somewhat amusing as they use their feet as landing gear. if its leg is OK it should be able to walk on it's stump, I wish it luck.
