Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: nesting (Debbie)

I live on a lake in Mass. I have a pair of swans that have been here for approx 5 yrs, therefore, I am pretty familiar with their nesting ritual. In my estimation, the female has been on her nest for the month of May. It is now June. I am beginning to get concerned that something has happened to her. Shouldn't the cygnets have already been born or is it possible that this year (due to an unusually warm spring)the babies could be born later in the month and she is still sitting on the nest? I have already seen other cygets in different towns around my area. The male comes to me for his daily visit, yet I have not seen her at all. As a rule, both swans visit me several times a day. We have made a bond over the years, thus my concern.
