Ask the Swan Specialist

In Response To: Re: Mute Swans (The Regal Swan)

Hi Betty:

Get him to a veterinarian that is experienced in waterfowl or at least birds quickly. He is either suffering from heat stress or posdible poisoning. Find out exactly what Orkin sprayed and where to ascertain if he ate something with poisoning. If he is not moving, he could be too weak or may have somehow
injured himself. Also, if a swan has been fed properly with supplemental food such as cracked corn mixed with poultry layer pellets, the fecal matter should be somewhat compact similar to a dog's feces in appearnce. If no supplemental food is being provided, the fecal matter will be somewhat runny and green in colir due to aquatic vegetation being ingested. If you are not supplying supplemental food,he
may have a nutritional problem. In any case, you need to get him to a vet and it might not be a bad idea to take his mate to insure nothing is wrong with her. If he has ingested something bad or uf he has infection, she could also have a problem which you may not notice until it is too late. Let us know how is doing. The Regal Swan
